LM555CN is a device that generates accurate oscillations or time delays. Often, extra terminals are added to reset and trigger if need be. In the mode of time delay, time is controlled by one capacitor and resistor.

During the astable operation as an oscillator, the duty cycle and free-running frequency are controlled by one capacitor and two external resistors. During the monostable process, the time delay is handled by one capacitor and an external resistor.

The output can sink up or source up to 200mA if it doesn’t drive TTL circuits. Also, it can be reset or triggered in falling waveforms.

LM555CN datasheet

According to its datasheet, some of the main specs of the timer are:

  • Adjustable duty cycle
  • Output can sink or source up to 200mA
  • Available in 8-pin MSOP package
  • Direct replacement for SE555
  • Usually off and typically on output
  • Timing from microseconds through hours
  • Temperature stability better than 0.005% per oC
  • Operates in by monostable and astable mode

The following are the key application areas for the timer:

  • Pulse width modulation
  • Linear ramp generator
  • Precision timing
  • Pulse generation
  • Sequential timing
  • Time delay generation
  • Pulse position modulation

LM555CN pinout

LM555CN has eight pins. Pin 1 is the ground pin that is connected to the ground. Pin  2 is the trigger pin, and pin 3 is the output pin. Pin 4 resets the voltage while pin 5 controls the voltage. Pin 6 is the threshold pin, and pin seven is the discharge pin. Pin 8 is the Vcc pin.

LM555CN Equivalents and Replacement Details

The equivalents of LM555CN are NE555N, NE555D, SA555D, SA555 and LM555CM. All of these are available in either the 8-DIP or 8-SOP package. LM555CN is available in the 8-DIP package. But for the SA55 and SA555D, the operating temperatures of the other equivalents are similar to those of LM555CN.
